European Law

Switzerland is closely linked to the European Union and the European Economic Area. This can be explained by Switzerland's geographical location, as it is in the heart of Europe. Thus, Switzerland engages in brisk import/export trade with EU suppliers. In addition, numerous international organizations and companies are based in Switzerland. Switzerland is a popular financial center for companies and private individuals from the EU - it attracts with financial as well as political security and favorable taxation. As a result, European law is highly relevant for many companies, public institutions, and private individuals in Switzerland.

In a narrow sense, European law refers to the law of the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Society. In a broader sense, it also includes the law of the other European international organizations.

EU law is divided into primary and secondary law. The basis for EU action is the Treaties, which are part of primary law. Secondary rules include decisions and rulings, regulations, and directives. These derive from the principles and objectives laid down in the Treaties.

EU law aspects may come into play in connection with environmental law, media law, business law, labor law, telecommunications law, migration law and more. Tax law issues may also arise in connection with EU law.
